Down Under check-in — who else is on AU/NZ time?

Kicking this off so we have one place for it — drop a line whenever. No format, no pressure. Be kind, no numbers gatekeeping, and if someone's week was rough, that counts too.

love an AU/NZ corner! I’m in NZ, and my tiny win this week was prepping five jars of overnight oats with berries so breakfast isn’t a decision at 6am. I’ve also got a paper habit tracker — just water, a 10-min walk, and lights out by 10:30. No scale numbers, just noticing patterns. Sharp question: what’s the one habit that makes your whole day easier when it’s done? Mine’s the walk, even if it’s just around the block.

Aussie cafe owner here — the afternoon pastry tray is my daily boss fight 😅

Perth here — been around since the old daily check-in threads, so nice to see an AU/NZ corner again. My tiny win this week was a big pot of minestrone, portioned and frozen, so the 6pm “what’s for dinner” panic is handled. Also moved my walk to lunchtime because it’s dark by 5:30 now and evening me is useless. Long view: winter always makes me want carbs, so I’m leaning into soups and early nights. Sharp follow

WA here too — my tiny win was finally finding my yoghurt back in stock. Small victories!

Auckland here, night shift so my check-ins land weird. Tny win: hit my water goal before 3am for once.

Auckland night shift — respect. My check-ins are just me and the possums.

Adelaide checking in, a little late to the thread but glad it exists. My Sunday reset is the one habit that steadies me: I roast a tray of vegetables, portion five lunches, and wash and chop fruit so the week starts easier. I track daily but only really look at my weekly average, because one odd day rarely tells the full story. This week’s small win was sticking to that prep even though I was tired. Curious whether others here lean on a weekly average too, or prefer to just reset each morning?

Auckland night shift + possums = your check-ins are just an async standup.

Sydney here — tiny win: walk before the heat, then actually cooked the veggies instead of just buying them.

Sydney heat is no joke — pre-dawn walk then actually cooking the veg is a proper double.

Hi everyone, sorry — brand new, week one, and still a bit nervous about posting. I’m in Brisbane, so the arvo storms keep cancelling my after-work swim, and I’ve started a paper checklist on the fridge: water, 10-minute tidy, bed by 11. Apps just overwhelm me right now. Does anyone else track habits on paper, or have a low-effort way to keep it visible without turning it into a whole project? Thanks for this thread — nice to know there are others in our time zone.

brisbane here, late-hours gamer. my soda-swap experiment: sparkling water + lime in a straw cup next to the keyboard, and i mark each swap with a dumb little star in notes. 14 stars this week vs 2 actual sodas. not huge but it’s the only tracking i’ve ever stuck with. anyone else track swaps instead of full meals? also hi to the week-one poster, posting is genuinely the weirdest part.

Auckland cafe owner here — the 3pm pastry tray is my villain origin stry 😅

Cafe owner here too — the 3pm tray is a tiny tyrant, I feel you 😅

Wellington here — the 4:30pm darkness has thrown my hunger signals sideways. I keep getting “dinner!” at 5pm when I’m actually just cold and bored. My current experiment is a two-line note in my phone: sleep quality + whether I’m physically hungry or just restless. It’s surprisingly revealing. Gentle question for the late-night gamer and cafe folks: does your body-clock weirdness show up more in the afternoon or late evening? I’m trying to learn my own patterns

Christchurch here — the 4:30pm darkness has my stomach convinced dinner is a 5pm event too 😅

Adelaide here — the half-hour time zone means I’m permanently 30 mins out of step with the east coast, and my appetite seems to have joined in. I remember a thread last winter about the 6pm cooking-pickies; that’s still my danger window. I’ve started having a mug of miso soup while I chop veg, which mostly stops me grazing the kids’ pasta. Not glamorous, but it’s held up longer than any grand plan. Is the cooking hour a thing for anyone else, or do you all sail through to actual dinner?

Wellington here — dark at 4:30 means my post-lift hunger is fully convinced it’s dinner time 😅

Night shift here, so 4:30 dark is just my lunch break. Body gave up on clocks years ago.

Auckland here — 4:30 dark has my dorm canned tuna convinced it’s a 5pm dinner. Send help.

For what it's worth, christchurch here — dark at 4:30 and my new walk is just laps of the kitchen while dinner pretends it’s midnight.

Dunedin here — this is last winter’s 4:30 club reunion, and my body clock is still lost.

Wellington here — 4:30 dark just means my walk ends at the soup pot now.

hamilton here — 4:30 dark means my dorm rice, frozen peas and one sad egg is dinner.

auckland here — plateau and 4:30 dark is a rough combo, but I’m still doing the laps.

Christchurch. I stopped fighting the after-work walk and moved it to lunch. Concrete: 20 min loop at 12:30, logged with sleep latency and next-morning hunger. Two weeks in, that walk is the only variable correlating with not raiding the pantry at 9pm. Sharp question: anyone tracking morning outdoor light vs evening cravings? I use a cheap lux app, nothing fancy. Data > vibes. Rough week still counts—log it anyway; blank cells are data too.

Tauranga here — two kids, chaotic tea time; our snack drawer is basically the fifth food group. 4:30 dark = soup and toast.

Hobart here. I’ve started making a pot of minestrone on Sunday and freezing it in single portions — it has become my fallback on late work nights when I would otherwise graze while waiting for laundry. I only look at my weekly average on Sunday morning, which keeps one odd evening from feeling like the whole week. Tauranga, the snack drawer comment made me smile; does a planned “boring” backup dinner help with chaotic tea time, or do the kids see through it immediately?

Melbourne here — my trendline says lunch walks beat 4:30 dark, annoyingly.

Kia ora, Auckland, week one and quietly panicking. My one tiny concrete thing: I fill a 1L water bottle after dinner and leave it next to the kettle, so it’s the first thing I see in the morning. Silly, but it stopped my usual two flat whites before 9am. Sharp question: what do you do with the 3pm slump? That’s my witching hour and I’d love a non-food reset that isn’t just another coffee — I’m stuck at a desk. Thanks, and sorry if this is a daft question.

👍 4

sydney here, living off airport yoghurt and hotel kettles — glamorous 😂

👍 6

Auckland — week one panic is normal; the bttle habit is weirdly grounding eh?

👍 6 ❤️ 1

Chch night shift. I stopped treating 3am as a meal and just do a mug of broth + a boiled egg. Weirdly keeps me out of the vending machine. Also track sleep before appetite. Bad sleep = snack brain. Anyone else find days off harder than the shifts? I can nail a work night, then go feral on a Tuesday.

👍 8 ❤️ 2

melbourne, checking in from a very grey morning. My concrete thing: the scale lives on the hard bathroom tiles, not the bathmat, and I only log the number in a notes app beside a 7-day average. Daily weighing used to feel like a report card; now the average is the actual story and the daily is just weather. Rough week? I highlight the row orange and keep going — no drama, just data. Curious: does anyone else have a weirdly specific weighing ritual, or am I the only one who moves the scale back to the exact same tile corner every time?

👍 5 ❤️ 1

welly here, week one too — late-night gamer surviving on fizzy water and the same old bottle 😅

👍 5

Auckland here too — two kids, so my snack drawer is basically a food group some nights 😂

👍 9 ❤️ 1

Chch here — courier tracking has become my nightly entertainment 😂

👍 1

auckland here too — snack drawer absolutely counts as a food group some nights 😂

Auckland here — lift, protein, sleep, then the snack drawer still wins some nights 😂

👍 8 ❤️ 1

Dunedin here, late to the thread but this is a good idea. Concrete win this week: booked four 45-min lifting slots

👍 6 ❤️ 1

Chch here. Mildly contrarian spreadsheet take: I don't track daily weigh-ins on travel weeks at all — I tag them 'away' and exclude them from my trendline. My 7-day average at home is boringly downward; adding travel points made it look like a seismograph. The only travel metric I bother with is whether I hit my usual protein + walk targets, and I mark those green/red. Anyone else separate home vs away data, or do you just let the noisy points ride and trust the monthly line?

👍 5

Kia ora from Christchurch — also brand new, week one, and mostly lurking so I don’t say the wrong thing. One tiny concrete thing I’ve started: herbal tea and phone on the charger in the kitchen at 8:30, because 9pm is my danger zone for bored fridge-rummaging. Does anyone else find evenings the wobbly part, or does it hit earlier in the day for you? Not tracking much yet, just trying to notice actual hunger vs habit hunger. Thanks for this thread — nice to know there are others on this side of the world.

👍 9 ❤️ 1

Wellington. My week wasn’t rough, just logistically stupid: late shifts + daylight saving. Concrete thing that worked: I moved my walk to 20 min after lunch, not after work. The after-work version was constantly cancelled by weather or decisions. Lunch version has zero willpower tax. Sharp follow-up: anyone else find the 4pm snack urge is actually just “haven’t been outside since 7am”? I’m testing that theory this week with a tally in Notes.

👍 4 ❤️ 2

Perth here, so I’m perpetually reading this thread six hours late. My current system is a “minimum viable day” checklist on the fridge: protein at breakfast, 10-minute walk, bed by 10:30. Nothing heroic. If I hit 2/3, the day counts. What’s everyone else’s bare-minimum version when the week goes sideways?

👍 2

Wellington here — the 1L bottle habit is real, and your hotel kettle yoghurt made me smile.

👍 12 ❤️ 2

Wellington here, week three. The thing that finally worked for me was moving the scale out of the bathroom entirely — it lives in the hall cupboard now, so I have to consciously go get it instead of getting ambushed every morning. Small friction, big difference in how much headspace the whole thing takes up.

Question for the group: is anyone else finding the late-afternoon slot is the danger zone? Mine hits around 4:30 like clockwork, right when the kids come home and the day falls apart. Curious what other people do with that specific window.

👍 2 ❤️ 1

Airport yoghurt + hotel kettle = elite cuisine 😂 Sydney here too, back after a regain. Solidarity.

Brisbane checking in. Travelling for work this week, so I have been leaning on supermarket pre-cut fruit and a small electric kettle for tea rather than trying to be perfect. I track weekly averages, which helps when one day is all airport snacks and no vegetables. Something that has helped: a two-minute note each evening with one thing that went okay — sleep, water, a walk to the gate. It sounds small, but it stops the week from feeling like a write-off. For the Auckland week-one nerves: the first week is often just data-gathering, not a verdict. What is everyone's easiest travel breakfast that is not yoghurt?

👍 4

Rural Vic here, and my local pharmacy ladies now ask about my dog before they ask about me — small-town priorities. My concrete thing this week: a Sunday arvo fridge audit. I chop whatever

👍 5 ❤️ 1

Honestly, syd here, still lurking from the old check-in days — rough weeks count, and courier tracking is a mood 😂

👍 3 ❤️ 1

Welly here too — my concrete win this week: actually chilling the fizzy water instead of drinking it warm 😂

Auckland here too — two kids, so the snack drawer has fruit pouches and emergency rice crackers 😂

👍 5

ha, the 1L bottle thing is real — mine's still on my desk 3 years later 😂

👍 8 ❤️ 1

Honestly, perth checking in, currently dark and already ridiculously humid. My concrete anchor now that I’m maintaining: a short walk before coffee, rain or shine, because if I sit down first the day swallows it. Not heroic, just keeps my head in the long game. Rough week here too — head cold, lived on toast and soup, and I’m calling that a win. Question for the AU/NZ crew: what’s

👍 3

Chch here — also refreshing tracking like it’s a stock ticker, week one solidarity 😂

👍 6 ❤️ 1

Akl here - does the fizzy water actually help or are we all just hydrated and hopeful? 😂

👍 6 ❤️ 1

Melbourne, checking in from a very cold 6am. Long plateau here — same 2–3kg bounce since May and I’m properly over it. The one new thing helping my sanity: I’ve stopped daily weigh-ins and switched to a Wednesday average in my Notes app, plus a photo of my plate before dinner. Not because I’m virtuous, purely so I stop “forgetting” the handfuls I eat while cooking. It’s made the plateau less mysterious, even if the scale hasn’t moved yet. Anyone else find a mid-week average kinder than the daily rollercoaster?

👍 5

melbourne, checking in. Travel weeks used to wreck me until I started logging three lines in my phone each night: sleep hours, protein at first meal, fluids before 3pm. No app, no macros, 20 seconds. Crude, but it flags the slide before the scale does. For the airport-yoghurt person — supermarket rotisserie chicken or pre-cooked eggs landside beats terminal food, and they survive a hotel kettle-less room fine. Question for the group: does anyone else find a rough week shows up in sleep before it shows up in appetite?

👍 5 ❤️ 2

Christchurch here, empty nest as of February and still figuring out what dinner looks like for two instead of four. My small new thing is a Sunday cook-up: roast a tray of whatever veg is cheap, then make a big pot of soup and freeze it in single portions. Sounds boring but it’s stopped the 5pm “what’s the point” toast-for-dinner spiral. Also doing a 20-minute walk around the block before I eat, mainly to get out of my own head, and I put a dot on the calendar for both. Question for the hotter-time crew: how do you handle heat/humidity walks? I’m fine in the cold but wilting here.

👍 6 ❤️ 1

Kia ora from Welly — week one here too, the 1L bottle is the only thing I've organised 😂

👍 7 ❤️ 2

Auckland here too — snack drawer solidarity 😂 mine's mostly crackers and good intentions

👍 5 ❤️ 1

Aussie here — daily weigher, but the trend line is the only drama I trust 😂

👍 4

honestly week one panic is real, but canned chickpeas + rice + hot sauce got me through 😂

👍 2 ❤️ 1

Auckland — week one panic here too; my spreadsheet is mostly water bottle tallies and vibes 😂

👍 2

melbourne here, school-run chaos so close enough. My snack-drawer rule: if it needs two hands, it’s not a 3pm snack. Pre-cut carrot, hummus cups, babybels, roasted chickpeas. I eat them at the bench while unpacking school bags instead of inhaling the kids’ leftover Vegemite crusts. What’s your go-to that actually survives a handbag and a toddler?

👍 5 ❤️ 1

Perth. Night shifts, so my “dinner” is 3am. Concrete thing that helps: I prep a plate before I leave and stick it in the fridge. Otherwise I inhale servo food at 5am. Tracking is just a note in my phone — what I ate, roughly when. No fancy app. Also 10 min walk on my break instead of scrolling. Rough week here too, but that’s why this thread works. Anyone else find the morning after a night shift the hardest? I can sleep or eat, not both.

👍 3

Adelaide here, empty nest and rebuilding a routine that isn’t just work and telly. My concrete thing: a 20-minute loop around the local oval before breakfast, while it’s still cool. Then Sunday arvo I roast a tray of veg and make a big pot of soup, so there’s something decent waiting when I can’t be bothered. Tiny tracking win: a note on the front door that says “walk first, then tea.” Sounds daft but it works. For the hot-weather crew, are you walking early or waiting till dusk? I’m still figuring out which one sticks.

👍 3 ❤️ 1

Brisbane here. My data-calm thing: daily weigh, but the only number I actually act on is the 7-day average. If it wobbles, I ask whether I’m sore, salty, or short on sleep — then move on. Keeps the noise from steering the day. Sharp follow-up: anyone else only check the trend after coffee, not before? And what’s your low-effort movement for a stinking hot arvo — shady walk, pool laps, something else?

Hey team, Dunedin here — been on this ride a while now. Remember that "non-scale victories" thread from last winter? Still one of my favourites. These days I'm tracking walks on a paper wall calendar, not an app. Something satisfying about pen on paper. Sharp question: does anyone else find their whole evening routine shifts when the southerly hits? I'm useless after 8pm in this cold. No pressure, just curious.

👍 1

Christchurch checking in, grey and windy. A rough week still counts; glad this space exists.

👍 3

AKL here — hotel kettle cuisine and a carry-on full of snacks 😂

👍 5 ❤️ 1

Perth here, so I'm usually last to the party. Daily weigher too — but I only let the 7-day average have an opinion. My scale lives on the same tile, same time (post-loo, pre-coffee), and I log it in a spreadsheet that looks like a seismograph. The noise used to mess with my head; now I just zoom out and look for the direction. Question for the group: does anyone else's trend line do a little weekend shimmy? Mine always bumps up Sunday/Monday then settles. Curious if that's just sodium and travel or if I'm just reliably human. Either way

👍 1 ❤️ 1

Dunedin here — uni halls, so my dinner is basically whatever the dining hall calls “protein” plus a can of tuna I smuggle in like contraband. Tracking? I scribble it on a sticky note above my desk; if I open an app in the queue I panic and log three servings of chips. Anyone got a no-fridge, no-stove cheap protein hack? My current innovation is cottage cheese and instant noodles, and I refuse to apologise.

👍 2 ❤️ 1

Sydney here — grey too. My tiny win: water bottle refilled before the 3pm slump. What’s yours today?

👍 3 ❤️ 1

Wellington here, also on the fizzy water, and my cat has claimed my lap as her official nap station.

👍 2 ❤️ 1

Tbh auckland here — supermarket rotisserie chicken + hotel kettle cuppa got me through too 😂

👍 4

Aussie here — my source is this thread, but I still want citations for late-night snack cravings 😂

👍 3 ❤️ 2

I’m in Sydney and still very much in the “learning my own signals” phase. One thing that’s helped: a 3pm phone reminder to pause and ask, am I actually hungry, or just coming down from the day? Sounds basic but it’s been eye-opening. Also keeping frozen edamame around for when I want to snack without a whole production. Curious — does anyone else find their hunger cues are way clearer on work-from-home days versus office days? Mine are like two different people.

👍 1

Evening all — another long-game maintainer here. The one habit that's outlasted every phase is a 10-minute kitchen reset before bed: dishes away, counters wiped, nothing left to nibble on. Boring, but it works. What's your weirdly effective non-food evening ritual? Always looking for new ones.

Brisbane too — hotel kettles are elite. Solo travel weeks are just survival mode 😅

👍 2 ❤️ 1

Taihape here — tiny town, a pharmacy, and the pharmacist now knows my dog's name 🤷

👍 2 ❤️ 1

Adelaide here — the 30-minute offset means every telehealth reminder and app streak reset lands at a slightly cursed time. My system: one Sunday-night review, three lines max (weight trend, hunger, sleep), then I close the spreadsheet. If it needs more than three lines, it’s not a trend, it’s a mood. Curious: does anyone else run their week on a different reset day, or are we all defaulting to Monday because calendars are bullies?
