Trying to eat smaller without the grocery total climbing

We became empty nesters last fall, and I’ve been rebuilding suppers for two instead of four. My appetite is smaller now, so I expected the food bill to shrink, but fresh herbs, berries, and yogurt were dying in the fridge before I got to them.

Last month I spent $418 on groceries for the two of us, which is more than I guessed.

My new walk habit is free, at least. I’ve started tracking cost per actual eaten meal, not cost per package, and keeping a short list on the fridge: dried lentils, eggs, cottage cheese, frozen edamame, cabbage, canned tuna. Not glamorous, but I waste less.

I’m still figuring out which cheap protein I can eat three days in a row without getting tired of it. What’s your default low-cost meal when your appetite is small and cooking for one or two feels pointless?
